The first known group, the Nevares Spring
People, were hunters and gatherers who
arrived in the area perhaps 9,000 years ago
(7000 BCE) when there were still small lakes
in Death Valley and neighboring Panamint
Valley.[12] A much milder climate persisted
at that time, and large game animals were
still plentiful. By 5,000 years ago (3000 BCE)
the Mesquite Flat People displaced the
Nevares Spring People.[12] Around 2,000
years ago the Saratoga Spring People
moved into the area, which by then was
probably already a hot, dry desert.[12][note 2]
This culture was more advanced at hunting
and gathering and was skillful at handcrafts.
They also left mysterious stone patterns in
the Valley.

Before Mormon settlement, the Shoshone, Ute,
and Paiute had dwelt in the Salt Lake Valley for
thousands of years. However, occupation was
seasonal, near streams emptying from
Canyons into the Salt Lake Valley. The first US
explorer in the Salt Lake area is believed to be
Jim Bridger in 1825, although others had been
in Utah earlier, some as far north as the nearby
Utah Valley (the Dominguez-Escalante
expedition of 1776 were undoubtedly cognizant
of the Salt Lake valley). U.S. Army officer John
C. Frémont surveyed the Great Salt Lake and
the Salt Lake Valley in 1843 and 1845.[5] The
Donner party, a group of ill-fated pioneers, had
traveled through the Great Salt Lake Valley in
August 1846.
